Travels Via Skype

Travels

So far we have visited via Skype 10 different states.  Not only have we been practicing our math number skills with other 2nd graders, we have also been able to learn about their geography and interesting facts about where they live.  Can’t wait for the next connections to take place!  Where will we go next?

Measurement

We have been working on our measurement unit.  Students need to be able to identify and measure using inches, feet, yards, centimeters, and meters.  We are doing a lot of measuring and comparing.  The students are making a book creator video with each unit that we learn.  Their videos will be added to their digital portfolio in time for parent teacher conferences in 3 weeks.

Yesterday we were privileged to listen to a presentation by Pam Flowers. She is an author of several children’s books.

She had nine dogs that pulled her sled.  She traveled around 2500 miles on her trip.  On her trip she ended up staying at someones house for 5 1/2 months until the ice froze so that she could travel with her dogs again.

She found a wrecked ship.  The ship had been there for a long time. The captain of the ship drove the ship on the beach because there was a rock that made a big hole in the ship.

Her dogs would stick their head in seal holes and try and catch the seals.  One of her dogs Anna fell into one of the seal holes and almost died.  We were very happy to find out that Anna survived.

On Christmas Eve she showed up in a small town and saw Santa.  Santa gave her a big bag with 8 fish for her dogs.
